SUMMER AND EARLY FALL SPORTS PROGRAMS

SAILING  Welcome aboard for another season of sailing! Our Sailing program begins training Monday, June 2, 6:00-8:00 at the Washington Sailing Marina, near Reagan National Airport. If you are a returning sailing athlete, be sure to sign up online so that paperwork will be completed before June 1.

Athletes new to sailing must be able and willing to follow verbal directions, and weigh less than 200 pounds. We sail in 16-20 foot boats, with a Unified Partner crew and 1-2 athletes. The boats are tied at a dock and are entered from the dock. Life jackets are required and provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own. For more information call Ben Ackerman at 240-381-6514 or email benackerman@aol.com

Text Box: KAYAKING	The kayaking season will begin in May and conclude with the State Regatta at the end of July. Every year we practice on Saturday mornings at Black Hill Regional Park, where we moor our kayaks during the season. This year all of our Kayak Team athletes will be returning from last season. Although at this time we do not have any openings, I would be glad to talk with anyone who is interested in the program and we can put your name on a wait list. CYCLING CLUB      The Cycling Club returns in Montgomery County! Beginning June 21st we will practice every Saturday from 9:00 am until 10:30 am at Bohrer Park except holiday weekends. The purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for athletes to get a workout in a safe environment and an opportunity to compete in qualifiers and state cycling events.    Athletes will find a variety of cycling levels. We have riders averaging 3 mph to 15 mph. The cycling program is open to all athletes who can ride (we do not have the resources to provide a “learn to ride program”) and have a bike (two or three wheels) and a helmet. For safety reasons we require that all athletes be accompanied by a Unified Partner while riding (adult     parent, sibling, guardian, counselor or friend). Bohrer Park is located next to Gaithersburg High School and has a one mile paved circuit with no vehicular traffic. The path has hills, curves and straight stretches.

We also require that all athletes provide their own transportation to and from all practices and competitions. From time to time we will change the venue of our practice to the C&O Canal or to other mutually agreeable locations for variety in the program.

Those athletes interested in participating are asked to complete the online application form on the SOMO website prior to the first practice. Any questions can be addressed to                    rennyspringuel@netscape.net. The Cycling State Games are scheduled for September 27. There will be qualifying competitions in both Maryland and Delaware during the season.
