It has been a wet spring season, but that has not dampened the enthusiasm of our SOMO athletes!

On Sunday May 4th the sun broke through to give us a spectacular day for our SOMO Spring Games as we got to show off our beautiful new training home: Our Lady of Good Counsel High School.

Our bocce team hosted Carroll County, Washington County and Frederick County teams and Coaches Renny Springuel and Chuck Hellmuth were proud of all of our doubles team performances. Coach Luc has been busy this season with “Papa duties” but has been able to stop by at training and will be at State Games to see his bocce teams “go for the gold”!  Coach Chuck and SOMO athlete Owen White are now certified bocce officials and will serve as officials for the State Summer Games. As one of the first counties to offer bocce, we are proud of our knowledgeable coaches and officials and of our close-knit bocce family!

The SOMO “Warriors” Senior Softball Team (so-named by Tony Stevens) hosted a game to give Howard County and SOMO a chance to have an extra competition leading into the next two weeks of travel games to Harford and Howard Counties. The Softball team has a record number of athletes this year and we are fortunate to have an amazing coaching staff led by Coaches Bob and Alex Golden, Coach Nate Crowe, and Coach Nancy Lloyd. State Games will be a time to shine for our team!

Coach Sponge BOB’s track and field team grows every year and boasted a record 89 registered competitors for the Spring Games meet. SOMO and Howard County athletes ran faster, jumped higher, and threw further than ever before! Records were set and smiles were abounding! The student volunteers from Good Counsel were amazing as they came at 8:30 to set up, cheered and ran events all day, and were the last to leave the stadium as all of the event

“Call us the Warriors” says Tony Stevens!

Event equipment came down. The enthusiasm and commitment to the quality of the experience for our athletes was wonderful to see. Thank you to Good Counsel for hosting and supporting our SOMO Spring Meet and special thanks to team manager Joyce Plaxen, Team data entry champ Frank Altrichter, MC Tere Quail, Announcer Carroll Piacesi, PA Pro and new OLGC Coach Theresa Smith, and all of our SOMO coaches for their help in putting together a big day!

Saturday, May 10th, the SOMO Sharks will host the Frederick County swim team in our Spring Games Aquatics meet at Stone Ridge. We are very grateful to Stone ridge School of the Sacred Heart for their generous donation of the pool facility to our swim team training program, and for hosting our Spring Swim Meet. Our swim team has been traveling all over Maryland this season competing in meets and improving strokes and times. Head Coach Margie Young has high hopes for her Sharks at State Summer Games, and will know who the Shark Delegation is following our Spring meet!

The SOMO Summer Games Delegation will make us all proud! Please mark your calendars for June 6-7-8, check the somd.org website for Games details, and come out and enjoy a wonderful weekend of competition and friendship building with us!

The tennis mini-season was a bit more mini than we hoped due to such a rainy spring, but our tennis athletes got a chance to spend some quality time with quality coaches and work on their game — all look forward to the Fall Tennis program which will begin in mid-August. Be sure to sign up soon as space will be limited, and first preference will be given to those returning tennis teams athletes. This Fall we look forward to competition at the State Fall Fest.
