Volunteer opportunities in SOMO:

SOMO needs parents and friends from our community to join the SOMO Coaching Family!

All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation. The next two orientations are scheduled for Wednesday August 20th and September 3rd at the Potomac Community Center from 7:00-9:00PM. Go to www.somdmontgomery.org and complete the volunteer interest survey. Our volunteer coordinator Chris Giusti will contact you with details about forms and applications.

·          Youth volunteers in middle school and high school can earn SSL Service Learning Hours by involvement in our programs. We welcome youth volunteers  to serve in our juniors programs as “buddies” to our junior athletes. Volunteers between the ages of 12-16 will be considered on a case by case basis and must attend a volunteer orientation with a parent to help us determine the best “fit” for a volunteer experience.

·          Adults ( and experienced high school volunteers) are needed to serve as coaches and assistant coaches in all of our sports. You do not need to have any expertise in a sport—we will train you! You  just need to have the time and the enthusiasm, and you will have a wonderful experience. Special Olympics offers coach certification programs in all of the sports and a general “Coaching the Special Olympic Athlete Certification” as well. But you can jump right in and begin coaching as soon as your volunteer application is processed. Our Head coaches will serve as your mentors as you learn the ins and outs of the sport of your choice.

·          Our all-volunteer Management Team is tasked with overseeing all of our programs, developing new ones, and raising the funds to support all of our programs. We welcome new members to the Management Team. We meet once a month on the third Tuesday of the month at the RIO Marriott in Gaithersburg. Contact Pam Yerg if you are interested in joining the SOMO Management Team family. We need help most urgently on the Volunteer Committee and with planning and running fund raisers. The Sport Director role is vacant and I would love to have someone to work closely with me to oversee sports programs each season. Email me at jeyclan@verizon.net ( Pam Yerg, Area Director)

·          A volunteer application can be emailed to you, and you can go online to take the brief Protective Behaviors survey that is required of all volunteers to get a leg up on the process!

·          Spending time with our athletes is a gift like no other. Join us.
