Athlete Assessment & Placement (Try-Outs) : Our coaches hold try-outs in early January, before the High School season begins, to assess player skills. All athletes, even returning athletes, must participate in Try-outs. Try-out results and demonstrated commitment to the team in past seasons both affect roster recommendations.  Coaches will determine rosters. In some cases, coaches may recommend placing a player in either a High School team in our Recreational Youth Program for further skill development, or on a team in our Competitive Adult Basketball programs.

Equipment: SOMO supplies all equipment needed by the athletes.

Uniform Requirements: Athletes should wear appropriate athletic apparel and tennis shoes. SOMO provides basketball jerseys and shorts.

Practice Overview:

Location: Einstein High School Gym, 11135 Newport Mill Rd, Kensington, MD 20895

Timing: Practice occurs on Sunday afternoons. Practice starts with early January try-outs and continues each Sunday until the weekend before the State Tournament.

Activities: Regular practice begins with warm-ups, followed by basketball skills training. Practice concludes with game play against another High School team.

Qualifiers: The High School teams will play in three Qualifiers where they will compete against teams from other Counties. The Montgomery County Qualifier is normally held at Georgetown Prep. The second qualifier is normally held in Frederick County. The third qualifier is to be determined. Coaches will announce Qualifier dates, locations, and logistics at the start of the season.

State Tournament: The State Tournament is normally held during the last weekend in March or the first weekend in April. It is a two-day tournament and is normally held outside of Montgomery County.

Eligibility for State Competition: Athletes must attend at least 6 practices and play in two Qualifiers to be eligible for State Games. Since this is a team sport, its important that all players commit to attending practices and competitions to keep the team eligible for State Competition.

Participation in Other SOMO Sports: Competitive High School Basketball athletes must choose Basketball as their only Winter Sport.

Athlete Participation Contract: Not required at present, but athletes are asked to commit to their teammates that they will attend try-outs, at least the minimum number of practices, all qualifiers and the State Tournament. Its a commitment that they make to each other.
