Head Coach: Renny Springuel   email:

Season: March/April/May/June

Training: Teams train every Saturday from 10 to 11:30 starting March 24, 2018 no practice on Saturday, March 31, 2018 or Saturday May 26, 2018.

Where:  Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center (1000 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring, MD 20901). We practice outside, to the left of the Center’s entrance, either on the covered Bocce courts or the nearby grass field. We hold practice rain or shine.

Competition:   Our local Regional Tournament is scheduled for SUNDAY, May 20 2018 as part of SOMO’s Spring Games at Landon School.  Other qualifiers are on Sunday April 29, 2018 in Anne Arundel County at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis MD, and on Saturday May 5, 2018 at 9AM in Charles County.

State Games: June 8-10, 2018 at Towson University

Bocce (Italian lawn Bowling) trains on Saturdays. It is important that all athletes arrive promptly and ready to train. Late arrivals have a serious negative impact on how the training session is organized.  Late arriving athletes may not be able to start practice immediately, they will have to wait until there is a break in the practice before they are inserted in the rotations.

We welcome new athletes to our bocce program. It’s a great sport for our athletes.

Special Olympics Maryland requires all bocce athletes to attend 6 practices and 2 qualifiers to be eligible to participate in the State’s Summer Games.

Athletes who wish to be considered for eligibility to attend Summer Games must also commit to bocce as their “primary” sport for the Summer season.  Given capacity constraints at Summer Games and in coach availability, when selecting athletes to invite to Summer Games, coaches give first preference to athletes who have committed to bocce. Similarly, bocce practice absences due to conflicts with other Special Olympics sports are not excused, so those missed practices do not help an athlete meet the State’s practice attendance requirement for Summer Games eligibility.

Maryland Special Olympics rules require all Summer Games bocce athletes to participate in at least two qualifiers. Montgomery County Bocce Athletes  must attend the SOMO Spring Games at Landon on May 19th  2018 and either the Naval Academy Games in April or the Charles County Games in May. On an exception basis, the Head Coach may excuse a SOMO Spring Games absence if the athlete attends both other qualifiers.

Coach Renny will provide details on other competition opportunities and on training requirements as they become available.

Just as last year, all athletes are required to sign an Athlete Participation Contract. Please find it HERE, sign it and bring it to the first practice.

High school athletes in MCPS who played in the corollary sports bocce teams are welcome to join the SOMO bocce team!

We will consider an additional training site if we have the athletes and the coaches support to do so! If you have another training site in mind please contact Coach Renny.

All athletes/volunteers must sign up for sport training prior to attending practice. Please sign up online as soon as possible so that we can make plans for coaching needs.
