Long Distance Running

Season: August/September/October

Training: Competition trainings start on Sundays in August then add Fridays in September.  The first Sunday training  is August 27th, 2017 11 to 12:30 at Lake Needwood. The first Friday training will be August 25th, 2017 at 5 PM also at Lake Needwood. Practices continue until the State Competition on 10/21/17.

  • NEW THIS SEASON! SOMO is exploring the addition of a “Power-Walking” group as a part of the Long Distance Running Team. We are offering this option to those athletes who have difficulty running the distances required to train and compete in Long Distance Running. Athletes who are identified as Power Walkers will be taught power walking technique and will be entered into the 800M Long Distance Run event in the Fall Fest. Power Walkers are encouraged to have a family member, friend or counselor attend practice with them and Power Walk along-side. Our SOMO Power Walkers will attend Sunday practices only as we will have the Coach and chaperone support on only one training day in these early days of a new sport.

We’ll be traveling to one qualifying meet and hosting the Inspiration Walk /5K Run on October 1, 2017 at Georgetown Prep. Baltimore Tunnel Run (5k) September Date TBA and Howard County has a qualifier in October  Date TBA at Reservoir HS near Clarksville. Participation in 2 qualifiers is mandatory for consideration for selection for competition in the Fall State Games Meet at Mt. St. Marys College on October 21, 2017

Where: Meet at the parking lot at BOAT DOCK                       

Competition:  Inspiration Walk/5K Run and Fit-Fun on 10-1-2017,  Howard County, or additional qualifier in September , and state games on Oct 21, 2017

Coach Sponge Bob will need the assistance of parents and older siblings to help with chaperone and leadership duties. Included in each session will be instruction on stretching and running techniques so all athletes are prepared for the Fall Cross Country season and competition in local, regional and state road races.

All athletes are welcome to attend practices even if they do not compete in Cross Country at the Fall Games.

All athletes/volunteers must sign up for sport training prior to attending practice. Please sign up online as soon as possible so that we can make plans for coaching needs.
