The expiration date on an athlete’s Medical form, or a Volunteer’s certification, must be after the above date to participate in the upcoming season.

Sailing Requirements… All participants must:

  • Be able and willing to follow verbal directions plus have basic swimming ability.
  • Wear a life jacket (PFDs) at all times. If you do not have a PFD – one will be provided to you.
  • Help get boats out of the water and stay until all are put away.
  • Be accompanied by someone who will stay at the marina and be ready to drive participant home if bad weather shortens the practice.

Programs:

  • Flying Junior Sailing Program*: with Georgetown Sailing buddies Dates: Mondays: May 6, 13 & 20, 2019. There is no sailing practice scheduled on May 27, 2019, Memorial day. The May program is non-competitive and intended to introduce new athletes and volunteers to sailing and provide early practice to our level 5 returning athletes. Space is limited.so register early.

                         * New Athletes must weigh less than 160 lbs due to the smaller boat size.

  • Competition Sailing Program: starts Monday June 3, 2019 with practices each Monday until the end of July for those attending Regatta. (June 3, 10, 17, 24 and July 2, 9, 16, 23, 2019)

Athletes registering for Competition Sailing ARE EXPECTED to attend all sailing practices in June and July to qualify for the Sailing Regatta. In addition to the Flying Juniors, we incorporate the SCOW and Hobie Cat fleets for Competition season. Qualified Athletes and Unified Partners will compete in both the VA and St. Mary’s Regattas in July. Space depends on the availability of boats and skippers. Register online as early as possible.

Time: Boat preparation begins at ~5:45 and continues until all boats are put away 7:45-8:15 pm.

Place: Washington Sailing Marina WSM. One mile south of Reagan National Airport on the George Washington Parkway. Sailing is in the small harbor near the snack bar.

Regatta Dates: 

VA Regatta at the WSM: Expected to be 7/20/19 not yet confirmed    

St. Marys MD Regatta: weekend of July 27-28, 2019

What to WEAR: quick dry clothes or a bathing suit, sunscreen, closed toed water shoes, hat and sunglasses – with a croakie holder. If you have long hair, bring a scrunchie to hold it out of your face while sailing.

What to BRING: water for drinking, rain or wind jacket, a towel and a COMPLETE CHANGE OF CLOTHES; including underwear, shoes, an extra hat, and sunglasses.

The sailing program is considered a Locally Popular Sport therefore SOMD does not cover any costs for competitions. We must raise funds locally to cover sailing program expenses.

  • Donate By Check: Make your check payable to Special Olympics Maryland – Montgomery County or SOMO and mail it to SOMO, PO Box 1809, Rockville, MD 20850.  Please write “sailing club” in the check’s memo field.
